Demonstrating Success to High Level Visitor to the US

article on Iraqi Surgeon General visit to my organization

My Brand

I’m working on “My Brand” after work.  Today I took my domain name I purchased for 9.99 at godaddy.com and through a small upgrade on WorldPress.com another 9.99 a year I was  able to use it ..louisjschwartz.com as my direct address URL.  I guess my website development days paid off.

From all the recruiter advice I have received, and several articles I have read this supposedly puts me ahead of others in the job market.  Luckily, I’m currently employed, so I have the luxury of time to work on this.  As President John F. Kennedy said; the time to fix the roof is when the sun is shinning.

Stage 1 Standards for Meaningful Use

Federal Register Online   [Page 2026] lol…is my favorite page because it starts the objective criteria for what your EHRs have to have to get the Medicare – Medicaid dollars.  Most of the folks that put this together are from the Boston area and have been leaders in the field for decades.  These items seem basic, but its taken years to get this far.  I like it.  I love the drug safety alerts.  The federal government health care system has been doing this many years.  I know avoiding one sentinel event  makes this capability cheap.  Another fun weekend reading the FR.

You Know Your Employees Respect You When

Silver room
I really felt good when I saw my office

I was coming in for my last day as the CIO and I walked in on a new and improved office.  I’m a very organized and neat person. This “problem” some folks say comes from my life experiences especially trying to get dressed in the dark or in 5 minutes or less to get to formation.  I always make sure our projects are marked complete when the old servers, boxes and media are turned in and or put away.  I have found that this is in contradiction to most IT folks…..so I got a present on my last day.

Putting Your People First

put your employees first

How did we get everyone to wear that ugly shirt.....

I worked at the organization where this picture was taken almost 5 years ago.  I continue to grow and learn about organizational behavior and leadership, but one of the things that stands the test of time is taking care of your employee’s.

Coming together to form a team.  A team that everyone in the organization wanted to join.  A team that was excited about our mission.  A team that was about getting the job done.

We didn’t start that way.  We had to break down the walls of distrust by addressing the “gorillas” in the room.  We had to reward promptly and in public and we had set a standard and follow it.

I remember the first time I gave an on-the spot monetary award.  One of the ladies called The Lord, and jumped for the Heaven’s.  It was the first time in over 20 years anyone in the Department had received an on the spot monetary award.  That little bit of money bought the organization a fresh and motivated employee.

Next Steps

Having read numerous articles, attended professional conferences and sought out guidance from friends, family, recuiters and associates I have decided to get my battle plans ready for the search and the securing of the next step in my professional career.  I’m getting ready to transition from my current position at year’s end.  I want to provide stability to my family concerning my living location, and I would like to find a position offering more possibilities for upward mobility.  I have been with my current organization for twenty three years and have throughly enjoyed it.  I’m looking for a challenge.
